6 industry leaders share how to look great after 50 with the best, safe products

In this exclusive article, they give their top tips for clean beauty over 50

I reached out the very best in the makeup and skin care industry - pioneers and celebrity experts who shine using exclusively nontoxic, hormone friendly, clean beauty products.

I wasn't sure if they would answer - but they did.

I asked them to share their

  • #1 makeup or skin care tip for women over 50
  • #1 makeup or skin care product for women over 50
  • #1 toxic ingredient to avoid in skin care and makeup

And in this article I am honored to give you some of the best advice I've ever come across on clean beauty over 50 - and introduce you to some of the best clean beauty products available - with insider info about each one.

Ok - hold on JUST a minute...

I'm an Acupuncturist and Herbalist who helps women get relief from hot flashes... Why are we talking about makeup & skincare?

Well... What I really do is show women how to use the right combination of natural remedies - Diet, Lifestyle, and Herbs to get the most menopausal relief by balancing hormones.

And this article is part of Lifestyle - because using skin care and makeup WITHOUT hormone-disrupting (not to mention cancer-causing) chemicals is key if you want to balance hormones naturally - BUT - I don't want you to give up products you love without finding clean alternatives that are as good - or better - because that's just not my style.

Let's Start with Skin Care Over 50

Because as Ivy Schnepp says in THIS interview - beauty starts with your skin - not with your makeup.

#1 MAY LINDSTROM:
may linstrom

Everything about May Lindstrom - her words, her products, her images - makes you feel beautiful - and like you want to love yourself.  It's pretty magic.  Her products are also some of the most celebrated in the world of natural beauty - on lists of cult favorites and celebrity must-haves.

Here's what May has to say to you:

May's #1 skin-care tip for women over 50:
Hydrate! Often, we get so caught up in fighting lines and wrinkles, clearing spots or working on tone that we forget that this delicate organ of ours simply needs a big drink. Hydration is both an internal and external process - plenty of clean water and good fats play a major role whether going towards our gut or our facial care regimen.

May's #1 skin-care ingredient to avoid:
Be kind to your skin. This means being wary of quick-fix tactics like strong acids and retinols, as well as cleansers or treatments that are stripping or overstimulating. Focus instead on feeding goodness where it's needed and working to restore your own natural balance and rhythm.

May's favorite product for skin over 50:
The Blue Cocoon. This is essentially the most beautiful and transformative facial oil you’ve ever experienced, in a unique waterless and waxless balm form. Upon contact with skin, this stunning concentrate melts immediately to a gorgeous blue fluid. This is effective both as your hydrator, or as a special treatment for skin that is sensitive, inflamed, damaged, acneic or irritated. The Blue Cocoon can be used as a spot treatment, or for the full face, neck and décolleté for an overall glowing complexion. It is a powerful anti-inflammatory and soothes skin in the most beautiful way, providing the perfect level of hydration and healing, eliminating redness and irritation. It works wonderfully for all skin types, and is especially effective for those prone to eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, and rosacea.

The Blue Cocoon’s magic ingredient is blue tansy, which calms and relieves inflammation on an unparalleled level. This concentrated beauty is like a meditation and spa vacation for your skin; in aromatherapy, blue tansy is used to reduce anxiety, manage anger, heal sleep disorders and soften the feeling of being out of control. Pretty incredible!

Total bonus - The Blue Cocoon doubles as my favorite eye and lip treatment of all time.

Warmly,

May

What I have to say about May's products? The price can be a little intimidating - but they are so concentrated.. You have to realize they're going to last 5 times as long as any other product the same size... And they make you feel like you've been pampered at a spa on a beach on an island.. And for that - they're a bargain.  Her Blue Cocoon is truly a must try.

And - in the world of nontoxic skin care products - there are those that play close to the line... They use some ingredients that sound like chemicals but aren't too toxic - so their average safety score is still really low, but they do contain ingredients that are hard to pronounce...  And then there are brands like May Lindstrom where every ingredient is straight from nature - something you would find in nature or in your kitchen - made 100% of the cleanest and most natural ingredients possible.

Get the full shopping experience at her website maylindstrom.com (the pictures and videos here are so beautiful you'll be glad you stopped by,) and you can get samples of any or all of her products at thedetoxmarket.com

#3 LIVING LIBATIONS
living libations

Nadine Artemis - founder and product creator for Living Libations is a true natural beauty guru.

Her ingredients are not only as clean and pure as nature can make them... She has an incredible, global network for sourcing the best oils and essential oils... And she is a true women's health expert.  Oh and her world is definitely magical.

For truly magical, luxury products the price point is appealing.  Living Libations makes skin care, body care, dental care, hair care, perfume, deodorant, and raw chocolate!

Here's what Kendra, natural skin care expert from Living Libations has to say about skin care over 50:

Kendra's #1 skin care tip for women over 50:
Washing the face with pure pressed plant oils is an ancient Ayurvedic and gracious gypsy method to cleanse and gently exfoliate the skin. Nadine designed the Best Skin Evers to be your finest bathing and beauty aide. These oils plus water and a cloth are the simple essentials to cleanse, exfoliate, moisten and bedew.

Kendra's top ingredient to avoid:

Sudsy surfactants (anionic, cationic, amphoteric, and nonionic), from sodium lauryl sulfates to cocamide DEA, have been scientifically stated to insert microscopic particles into pores and agitate the acid mantle. As a surfactants’ role is to break down oils and fats, you can imagine what long-term use of chemical surfactants does to aggravate our skin’s sebum and dry out our hydro-lipid layer.(pg 229 of the book below)

These surfactants that make skin squeaky clean also insert themselves into the stratum corneum and stay there even after rinsing, initiating chronic degradation to this delicate layer.  This results in inflammation and microbial elimination, which may manifest as melasma, blemishes, redness, dryness, and irritated skin.

Kendra's favorite skincare product for women over 50:
Rose Glow Serum is righteous for wisdom skin! Radiant for redness, and excellent for smoothing the appearance of fine lines! A few drops in the morning and a few drops at night alight the skin with pure, fresh, feather-light moisture. Enjoy on its own, or mix with a few drops of our Rose Glow Crème for an all-out infusion of magnificent-moisture and the potent power of rose.  Learn more about this product by clicking here!

In her new book, Renegade Beauty, Nadine Artemis invites us to rethink conventional notions of beauty and wellness, to abandon established regimes and commercial products, and to embrace "renegade" beauty--a practice of doing less and allowing the elements and the life force of Nature to revive the body, skin, and soul so that the natural radiance of our own beauty can shine through.

What I have to say - I carried Living Libations products when I had an organic beauty shop.  They're amazing, fantastic, and magical.  They feel happy.  For oil cleansing I highly recommend their Best Skin Ever - it's also a great moisturizer - for face and body.  Everything smells subtle and amazing - like it's truly alive - nature brought inside in the most sophisticated way.  So, basically, hard to describe and highly recommended.

And can I just say - we're hearing the same thing yet again - OIL CLEANSING!  Stop stripping the natural oils from your skin with sudsing cleansers:)  OK I think we're willing to give it a try!!

#4 FAT AND THE MOON
FAT AND THE MOON CLEAN BEAUTY

If you're looking for something truly all natural, everyday, reliable, and an excellent value...  Try Fat and the Moon.  They feel like they were made in a friend's kitchen - a friend who knows a lot about skin care.  They're deceptively sophisticated, and they cover all the bases - especially with skin care (though they also make beautiful eye color, lip color, cheek color, and shimmer.)  You can shop their beautiful website  or check their list of stockists for a store near you.   I also agree 100% with their top ingredients to avoid mentioned below  - very good advice here.

Here's what Lindsay, their in-house aesthetician has to say to you:

Lindsay's #1 makeup tip for women over 50:

Keep it creamy, powders tend to settle into fine lines. Keep it light, heavy makeup is unnecessary and can actually accentuate what you are trying to cover up. One of my favorite adornment items is our Beam highlighter, it looks beautiful on everyone! Use it on the cupids bow to make lips pop, on cheek bones, brow bones and the inner corners of eyes.

Lindsay's top ingredient to avoid:

Parabens are a huge no no, they are used as a preservative in many different body care and makeup products. Parabens mimic estrogen in the body. A study by the University of Reading in the United Kingdom found concentrations of parabens in human breast tumors.

Artificial fragrance is another ingredient I avoid at all costs. It is a blanket term that is often used to hide a long list of scary petroleum based chemicals that can not only irritate the skin and respiratory tract but can also do some serious harm internally too. Just remember that your skin is your largest organ, anything you put on it is absorbed directly into the bloodstream.

Lindsay's favorite makeup or skincare product for women over 50:

Moisture is the most important thing for maintaining healthy skin at any age. Some of my favorite products are:  Face Oil brimming with fatty acids, vitamin E, vitamin A and omegas all working together to nourish your skin and help it regain balance.

All Cream is alcohol free and contains both humectant and occlusive ingredients, two of skin's favorite things. The aloe vera in this cream works hard to draw moisture into the skin while the beeswax and shea butter create a barrier to stop that moisture from being sucked right back out. I love applying All Cream after Face Oil, they make a perfect combo. I wrote a blog post about the importance of moisture which you can read here.

What I have to say - Fat and the moon is like homemade at it's very best.  A great thing to have in your cupboard, rely on, and share with friends.  You can also contact them for product advice - because they're both really knowledgeable and really nice.

#5 MOODY SISTERS
moody sisters clean makeup and skin care

Moody Sisters has a complete line of skincare, body care, hair care, and makeup. And they constantly crack me up and inspire me.  Again - deceptively sophisticated.

Their blog and video tutorials are both informative and a blast...  And their kits and customer service is stellar (and the really fast shipping is nice.)  They have everything you need - no muss, no fuss - they make it easy - and it works.  Great products at a great price.  You can contact them for personalized skin care recommendations and for a makeup consultation with recommended colors and techniques - and they have samples!

Here's what Whitney (one of the moody sisters) has to say about skin care over 50:
A pampering skincare routine is key. As your skin ages it retains less moisture and has less collagen which makes it harder to keep it firm, plump and hydrated. Stick with a deeply nourishing skincare routine that includes a daily exfoliator to stimulate skin cells and tighten and always finish with a moisturizer to keep it plump and bright. These simple steps will make your skin glow (without makeup too!).

Whitney recommends their Complete Skincare Set for Dry, Sensitive Skin - it's really handy, includes everything you need - and comes with really detailed directions - check it out HERE.

What I have to say: I just love the Moody Sisters.  Every time I use their products I think of all the times they made me laugh or inspired me to give myself a pedicure.  And the price is so nice I'm often sharing these products with friends and family.

Now For Makeup Over 50

I'm so excited to give you some of the best - really detailed - makeup advice for over 50 faces that I've seen in a long time....

#6 ECCO BELLA
eco bella clean makeup and skin care for over 50

Darlene Zembrod is an Ecco Bella Beauty Expert - and she's shared her Tips for Evolving Women...

And they are fantastic!  Things like.. foundation is for evening out skin tone - concealer is for heavy coverage. Exactly what you need to know about eye color and lip color, the great advice goes on and on.  If you want a detailed, step-by-step primer on what to do with your face each day (or just a few key tips) - here you go.

Here's what Darlene recommends:

As women evolve our beauty regimes must evolve also and taking a look at our makeup applications and skincare regimes are crucial to make sure that we are being the best we can be at any age.

One of the best makeup tips we can do is making sure that our makeup is enhancing rather then detracting from our appearance. Priming the skin is key and Age Antidote Day Cream not only recharges and protects the skin with vitamincells and EccoShield, it also works as a great primer for makeup because it offers light diffusion which diminishes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Women must consider not applying foundation as they used to in there 20’s and 30’s. Now, sheer application is key, just to even out skin tone rather then coverage. 1 or 2 drops on a sponge applied with sweeping strokes work best. Where there are imperfection like age spots, blemishes, or dark circles a bit of Coverstick applied with a sponge in a stippling application will do the trick to cover.

Skip the face powders, unless applied with restraint, as powders can accentuate fine lines and wrinkles. If you are a face powder lover, mist skin with Mist on Toner after application to set and to keep skin looking dewy and youthful looking.

With eyes, concentrate on enhancing the eyes with light and medium matte colored eyeshades and bring most of the attention to the lash line rather then the full eye area where aging can take a toll. Smudge Seal, or Bronze eyeliner on upper and lower lids and apply mascara. This draws attention to your eye color and shape rather then any issues that might have developed over the years.

One of the hardest this for a woman to change is their lipstick color from the colors of their youth; which may have worked wonderfully when younger but can actually detract as time goes on.  Browns, too dark or too opaque shades need to be revised as lips tend to get thinner with age and fine lines can start to appear and these shades can accentuate these affects.

It’s best to play with colors that are a little lighter, or brighter and more luminous to cause the lips to look fuller and reflect a little light.

When trying to change your lipstick, take photos of yourself to get the full effect. Your makeup artist won’t mind. This way you are getting the full picture. When changing our lipstick shades we have worn for years, we tend to look strictly at our lips rather than looking into our eyes where you tend to see what other see as they look at us.

Lips shouldn’t be too matte or too glossy, both will detract as we mature. Satin finish is best.

Remember to use Eye Cream morning and night to keep eyes youthful.

As time goes on our skin slows down in exfoliating skin cells causing the skin to look dull, so a gentle exfoliant will work wonders in keeping skin refreshed. Natural Leave on Exfoliant for sensitive skin works wonders.  In your evening cleanse apply after cleansing and toning and leave on and wash off in the morning. The results are a softer more even looking complexion.

Changing your skincare products can be a costly venture, to minimize that try Ecco Bella Two Week VitaminCell skincare kit its price point is low and you can try most things in the line to see how it works for you. You will be glad that you did making a minimal investment for an optimal impact in your appearance and seeing how the products work for you.

What I have to say:  Ecco Bella has a really full line of high-performance makeup, skin care, hair care, and perfume that looks, feels, and performs a lot like traditional brands.  They have lots of color choices, refillable compacts, great ingredients, and an abundance of social responsibility.  And I love their LOOKS page and blog where you can get great information on what products to choose and how to use them.

Wow!! That was a LOT of information!
