Midlife Fatigue Isn't One Thing. It's Two. And They Need Opposite Fixes.
I was halfway to the gym when I had to pull the car over.
I was in perimenopause. My energy was gone — not tired, gone. The kind of tired where getting out of a chair is a decision. I'd always thrived on exercise, so on that particular morning I put on my workout clothes, got in the car, started driving. And halfway there I was crying and shaking because the effort of getting dressed and driving had used up whatever energy I had.
Sitting there on the side of the road, I remember thinking: the thing that has always given me energy is the thing I can't do. And I don't know why.
Here's what I didn't know then, and what I want to walk you through.
I was doing the wrong fix for the kind of fatigue I actually had.
Why the fatigue advice you've been getting isn't working
Midlife fatigue isn't one thing. It's two. And they need opposite fixes.
That's why nothing you've tried has fully worked. That's why half the internet is telling you to push harder and the other half is telling you to surrender. Both are right — for the women they're right for. If you're doing the wrong one for you, you're making yourself more tired, not less.
In Chinese medicine, the very first question we ask about fatigue isn't how tired are you. It's this:
Is your energy depleted, or is your energy stuck?
Both feel like fatigue. Both mean you don't have energy available to live your life. From the outside they look identical. Underneath, they're opposite problems that need opposite solutions.
Depleted fatigue
Depleted fatigue is when the tank is actually empty. There isn't enough fuel in the system. Your body has been giving out or losing more energy than it's been able to make — sometimes for years.
Signs you're likely depleted:
- Rest helps, even a little. You wake from a nap feeling somewhat better.
- Mornings are your best window. Energy runs out later in the day.
- Cleansing, fasting, or intense workouts wipe you out for days.
- Your fatigue came on slowly, after years of burning the candle at both ends.
Stuck fatigue
Stuck fatigue is when there's energy in the system but it's not flowing. It's blocked somewhere. The fuel is there — you just can't reach it.
Signs you're likely stuck:
- Rest doesn't help, or makes things worse. You sleep ten hours and wake up more tired than you went to bed.
- A little movement makes you feel better, even when you didn't want to move.
- Your fatigue came on suddenly, often around a hormonal shift like early perimenopause.
- You were vibrant your whole life, then something flipped almost overnight.
The mismatch that keeps women stuck for years
Here's the piece that changes everything.
If you're depleted and you keep doing the things that move stuck energy — cleansing, fasting, sweating, harder workouts — you deplete yourself further. There isn't enough water in the river to move around. Cleansing takes energy. Exercise takes energy. A body that doesn't have it can't spend it.
If you're stuck and you keep doing the things that refill depleted energy — resting, tonifying, layering supplements, eating rich nourishing food — you get more stuck. You're pouring more water into a river that's already blocked. It just backs up.
This is the mismatch that keeps midlife women exhausted for years. Not lack of effort. Not lack of information. Just the wrong fix for the state their body is actually in.
Two women, same symptom, opposite fixes
I recently heard about a woman in post-menopause, deeply involved in the healing arts. Incredibly healthy lifestyle, knows more approaches than most people by a factor of ten. Everything she was doing was aimed at moving stuck energy — juicing, cleansing, fasting, sweating. Her energy was depleted, not stuck. She was making herself worse, and had almost decided to surrender to it and let it run its course.
I've also worked with a woman in early perimenopause who used to ride her bike everywhere — grocery runs, errands, kids in bike seats. Vibrant, strong, fit. Then practically overnight she became so exhausted she could barely cook dinner. She was ready to start hormones the next day. Her energy wasn't gone — it was blocked. She was stuck, not depleted. Twelve weeks of the right approach and she was back on her bike.
Same symptom. Opposite fix. If either woman had done the other's protocol, she would have gotten worse.
The part nobody talks about: it flips
This isn't a state you identify once and stay in forever. It's a dance.
If you're depleted and you refill the tank properly, eventually you have new energy that needs help flowing. You become stuck. If you're stuck and you get things moving, eventually you use up what was there. You become depleted.
The skill is knowing which one you're in right now — and recognizing when it's time to switch to the other.
Why Chinese herbs work where other things haven't
Most tools for fatigue do one thing. Adaptogens tonify. Cleanses move. Stimulants push. If your body needs the other thing, the tool works against you.
Chinese herbs, when matched to your pattern, do the thing your body actually needs. If you're depleted, they refill. If you're stuck, they move. Same category of tool, aimed precisely at where you are today.
And Chinese medicine goes further than just refill your energy. It asks: what kind of energy? Your deep reserves — your energy savings account? Your everyday digestion-and-movement energy? Your cooling energy? Your warming energy? These are all different, and they can be depleted or stuck in different combinations.
This level of matching is why women who have tried a lot of things — supplements, HRT, protocols, cleanses, adaptogens — often find that Chinese herbs are the piece that finally moves the needle. And once the herbs are working, many of the other things she was doing start working too.
Lifestyle still matters — but it also has to match
A few things are foundational for almost every midlife woman regardless of state: keeping muscle and bone, enough protein, enough fiber, enough steps. Non-negotiable.
Then it customizes.
If you're depleted: warm cooked nourishing foods, gentler movement, sleep as a priority, dimmed lights at night, morning natural light, protein at breakfast, fewer intense workouts, more stability.
If you're stuck: more vigorous strength training, mobility, jump training, cleansing foods, and an honest look at what's actually blocked. Stress? Digestion? Sleep quality? Something not flowing?
Right herbs plus right lifestyle for your state. That's how midlife fatigue actually turns around.
One more thing: the leak
Sometimes when a woman is depleted, there's another layer. A leak has developed in her energy system — something draining her faster than any refill can keep up. Until you find the leak and seal it, no amount of nourishing food and rest is going to fill the bucket.
That's a longer topic for another post. I mention it because if you've been doing the depleted protocol correctly for a while and you're not seeing any lift, don't conclude the protocol isn't working. Look for the leak.
What to do next
That woman crying in the car on the way to the gym — that was me, fifteen years ago. I was deeply depleted, and I was forcing myself through the exercise routine that had always worked for me, which was the wrong protocol for my body at that moment. I was making things worse.
Once I figured out I was depleted — not lazy, not broken, not just aging — the whole thing turned around. I did also find a couple of leaks along the way. But I stopped fighting my body and started matching what I was doing to what it actually needed.
That's the beginning of everything I now teach.
I'm almost sixty. Hiking mountains, canoeing a hundred miles in the backcountry, traveling more than ever, feeling stronger than I did at forty. Not because I got lucky. Because I stopped guessing and started matching.
If you want to understand how Chinese herbs fit alongside food, movement, and lifestyle — and why they work brilliantly for some women and not for others — the Menopause Kickstart mini course is the best place to start. It walks you through the three secrets that changed everything about how I use herbs, and why my fifties became healthier than my forties.
Whatever kind of fatigue you're in right now — depleted or stuck — please don't surrender to it. There is a match for your body. You just haven't found it yet.
