Why Does It Take Longer to Recover From Injuries Now? (Perimenopause & Menopause)

Why it's changed - and what actually speeds it back up.

You twist your ankle, or pull something in your back, or get a scratch on your arm - and it turns into this bruise in your delicate skin that takes forever to heal. Sound familiar?

One of my students asked me almost this exact question: why does it take longer to recover from injuries now, and recover from workouts, than it used to? Did you even know this was changing so much - AND that there was a lot you could do about it?

Here's what's actually going on.

Why Recovery Slows Down in Perimenopause and Menopause

Your hormones used to keep a whole system running quietly in the background - connective tissue, inflammation, muscle repair, all of it. When those hormones shift, it's not one thing that changes. It's like dominoes - one tips, and it doesn't stop at just the one tile.

Three dominoes, specifically:

Connective tissue gets less resilient, so a tweak that used to be nothing turns into something you feel for weeks.

Inflammation runs a little hotter and stays around a little longer, which delays the early healing window - the part where your body's supposed to just get on with it.

Muscle rebuild itself needs more raw material than it used to, and that material's harder to come by.

Don't get caught up in how complicated this is. Just know it's real, and there's something you can do about it.

Hormonal Support Is the Starting Point

Most recovery advice out there is diet and exercise - eat more protein, stretch more, sleep more. None of that's wrong. But if you're doing all of it and still healing slower than you used to, there's a layer underneath that diet and exercise can't touch on their own.

The place to start is having hormonal support in place - herbs, HRT, or both. Even with HRT, the body doesn't process hormones the same way it used to. This is why herbs are so incredible at helping the body utilize and respond more like it used to.

Adaptogens vs. Tonic Herbs: The Difference Nobody Explains

There are herbs that help you cope with stress in the moment - those are adaptogens, and they're a great category. That's not what I'm talking about here.

What I'm talking about is a totally separate category: tonic, restorative herbs. Those don't just help you cope - they're traditionally used to support what's actually been depleted, not just get you through the day.

A Real-World Example: The 50/10 Rule

I've got a backpacking mentor who's done multiple triathlons and an Ironman, was a wilderness guide and wilderness EMT, and led backcountry search-and-rescue trips for decades. His rule: hike 50 minutes, rest 10, every hour. Like stopping every hour or two on a long drive to stretch your legs - something we all ignored when we were younger, and it's totally worth it now.

I got scratched up pretty badly a few days ago - an overly friendly golden retriever, sharp nails, my thigh, and of course I was wearing shorts. Three days later I was already about 90% healed. I gave myself a little cheer - like, OK, it's all working!

And that's how I know it's working - I've got the whole system in place. I'm not walking through every piece of it here, that's a whole post on its own. But if I could only keep one piece of it? It'd be the Chinese herbs.

If you're thinking, well, that's fine for you, I'm just an older woman now with thin skin that bruises easily and heals slowly - that's not the case. You can change how your body responds, from the cells up. My friend Joan, over at Train With Joan, is 79 and recomping her body at an age most people assume that's not possible anymore. I'm not reposting her photos here - go see her before-and-afters on her own site.

Why Herbs, Not Just Acupuncture, for Menopause

After 20 years doing this work, here's what I've seen: someone comes to me for a sprained ankle, I say, let's do acupuncture. Someone comes to me for menopause, I say, definitely Chinese herbs are what you want. That's the tip of the iceberg - the herbs are incredible for menopause. We need to start talking about it.

And this isn't just me saying it. A brand new review of 158 studies on Chinese herbal medicine for menopause, published this year, found moderate-certainty evidence - across 70 of those studies - that Chinese herbal formulas improved general menopausal symptom scores, sleep, and blood pressure, in as little as one to twelve weeks.

This isn't just Chinese herbs, either - it's Chinese tonic herbalism specifically, which is all about longevity and healthy aging.

Where to Start

If recovery's taking longer than it used to - from breaking a bone, a scratch, or just a hard workout - or you've stopped working out hard because it hurts so much for so long, that's not you falling apart, and it's not something you just have to accept now. You haven't been handed the piece that actually addresses it yet.

That's exactly what I walk you through in my free mini-course, Menopause Kickstart. Get started here →
